BUCKWHEAT & ALFALFA CAME HOME
They were from the same litter. I took two out of three --
The one that I picked and then the one who picked me.
I had dreamed of the first one. He was gold with some white.
A cute little kitten, it was love a first sight.
I didn't want a tabby, but lil' brother didn't know.
But, then he was "half tab," the rest was like snow.
So I took them both with me; and such joy that they brought.
They completed my family. They were all that I sought.
They were both little rascals, so their names came "like that."
The fluffy was Buckwheat and Alfalfa the brat.
(My wee Buckwheat was "wimpy," but as sweet as can be.
So gentle and loving and he looked after me.)
Little Wheatie was happy to let happen what will,
But Alfie decided to be king of the hill.
So he looked at my Cleo and decided to show
"The big shot is here and it's time you should know!"
Cleopatra rolled over (she let him save face).
She knew she was older and could keep him in place.
It took earthquakes to show that perhaps there could be
A "something" or "someone" who was bigger than he.
He still stayed somewhat "macho," (he would tell you with joy),
But deep down inside him, he was still "Mama's boy."
You should see how he sought me with a plaintive "mer-ow."
He wanted so much love and he wanted it "now!"
We had quite a family and it became more than three.
I found my dear Dudley who had great need of me.
All abused and abandoned, he was so much alone.
T'was time for some loving, and he found a good home.
He had brothers and sister and no reason for fright.
And his purr came back so he could now sleep at night.
Old Alfalfa would growl and try to show he was mean.
But Dudley ignored him so there couldn't be a scene.
After many years, we had come a long way.
Those two little kitties that I picked up that day.
They were so dear and so funny and always were true.
They gave me some hard times, but then most kitties do.
Cleopatra and Dudley? They were both quite content
And made us a family even Alf couldn't resent.
I give thanks for my Cleo. And the "boys" were such dears.
Thank God they were with me for so many years.
